When summer school at Virgin Valley Elementary wrapped up after 14 days this year, the Eureka Community Initiative did not go looking for teachers. It went looking for teenagers.

Six Virgin Valley High School students and recent graduates were hired, trained and paid to lead the four-week Mesquite Reads Summer Slam Reading Camp.

If bustling and uber-busy Las Vegas isn’t in the cards for a desert golf sojourn, why not opt for little brother Mesquite, Nevada? It’s a mellow travel experience a world away from the lively Vegas-baby atmosphere everyone imagines.

Cold winds during this brutal winter don’t bode well with golfers glued to the television, enviably watching Tour openers in warm climes like Hawaii, California, and Florida. Spring seems an eternity away.  But let’s fix this… the desert is calling your name and if Las Vegas is too clichéd, or ‘been there – done that’, try its sibling, Mesquite.

A high school culinary program in Nevada is thriving because of an initiative sponsored by Eureka Casino Resort in Mesquite, Nevada.

Since 2016, the Virgin Valley High School culinary program has trained students to be culinarians thanks in part to the ongoing support by the casino resort’s Eureka Community Initiative.

Playing Nevada golf in June? Despite the triple-digit heat, I traveled 80 miles up I-15 North from Las Vegas to Mesquite last week, to spend a few days playing golf and enjoying the town of 23,000. There are seven courses here within a 10-minute drive of one another. And you may have heard of it as the home of the annual World Long Drive championship. Regardless, it’s kind of an interesting little golf destination.

As summer heats up, so does one of Mesquite’s most impactful community initiatives. The Mesquite Reads program, now in its 11th year, is underway at JL Bowler Elementary School in Bunkerville. With 85 students enrolled and more joining daily, the program is on track to serve 100 local children in grades K–4, the largest group ever served at the Bunkerville location.

 Eureka Casino Resort’s Shreeek-Reeka Halloween event is back, celebrating its 12th year of thrills, chills, and fun for the whole family.

What workplace event or project are you looking forward to?

We are embarking on Eureka 3.0, which is a $40 million reimagining of the Eureka hotel and casino facilities to what we would build today if Eureka was new, and to put into place the platform to enable Eureka to be what we want it to be in the next 30 years.

We spoke with returning guest, CEO Andre Carrier, about Eureka Casino Resort's expansion. He aims to not only change the look and feel of the casino, but to also build residential housing around it.
