For three days in October the Eureka Casino Resort in Mesquite, NV became the "home away from home" for some of the best disabled golfers in the world. Over 45 amputees, paralyzed and blind golfers from 10 countries participated in the ParaLong Drive World Championships.
The Eureka team rolled out the red carpet for the golfers starting with a welcome dinner honoring the athletes, sponsors and volunteers on Thursday, Oct. 16th. Mesquite Regional Business sponsored the Mesquite Innovation & Technology Summit (MITS) at the Eureka Casino Resort. Presenters introduced leading edge human performance innovations such as and teen inventor Easton LaChappelle demonstrated the latest in brain-powered prosthetic robotic devices.
Christian Sidebottom, a cancer survivor & leg amputee from Phoenix, Arizona who competed for the first time was elated by the entire experience. "I had an amazing time in Mesquite, I met so many people that truly inspired me. Hitting golf balls next to people with similar disabilities and seeing the positivity through every stroke was something I'll remember forever. It was an honor to play in the championship and I'll be back next year to defend my title of above knee champion. The people at Eureka were incredible! Their event planning was amazing. They made us feel like family. I couldn't ask for a better trip this year. I had the best time."
One of the highlights at the championship was 3 year-old one armed golfer Tommy Morrissey. Tommy, who recently appeared on The Ellen Show, hit the ceremonial first tee shot on Friday, October 17th during the Opening Ceremonies at the Mesquite Sports & Event Complex.
While warming up, he hit a ball off a tee in the mouth of Eureka's Chief Operating Officer Andre Carrier. "If these guys can overcome their disabilities and play at this level, I can certainly put my face on the line," said Carrier. "Our Eureka family is humbled and honored to host this amazing event. These are the true heroes in our world and they deserve the spotlight. We will host this event for years to come."

Tommy Morrissey's parents were also humbled by the event. "We are extremely excited to join the ParaLong Drive team and the gifted athletes gathering in Mesquite from around the world to participate and celebrate tremendous individual achievement,” said Joe Morrissey. ”It is an honor for us to have our son Tommy hit the ceremonial ‘first ball’ and represent all individuals with physical challenges in such a special way! “
Morrissey continued; “We hope Tommy's story and participation in ParaLong Drive inspires individuals of all ages with physical challenges and gives them strength to pick up the clubs with a goal of being a ParaLong Drive participant and Grip and Rip it!“
The Golf Channel's Bailey Mosier was also on hand for the event. She did a live interview with ParaLong Drive World Champion Jared Brentz of Nashville, Tennessee. Jared is a double leg amputee that hit 340 yards.
